My wife and I recently saw the movie “I Can Only Imagine”. It is the story of Bart Millard and the extremely difficult relationship he had with his father growing up in Greenville, Texas. After high school Bart joined a band and hits the road in an old bus trying to live out his dream of becoming a success in the Contemporary Christian music business. It is indeed a dream many have but few are able to achieve.
There is one pivotal scene in the movie where Bart is with his father who is dying and his father gives him his life insurance policy. He tells Bart that he will receive a monthly check after he’s gone and he wants him to use that money to chase after his dreams. What an incredible gift. Of course we know the rest of the story. Bart goes on to write one of the most iconic Christian anthems of our time “I Can Only Imagine” and catapulted the band, Mercy Me, into mega-stardom. Bart continued to receive a check from his father’s policy long after fortune and fame had arrived.
